So this is a thing in Australia. The label on this tub of hundreds-and-thousands reads:

For the perfect fairy bread sprinkle 100’s & 1000’s heavily over buttered bread and cut into quarters.

Every Australian I’ve asked about this has told fond stories of how they were allowed fairy bread on their birthdays when they were kids. And apparently the bread has to be cut into quarters, and it has to be cut diagonally.

• 2 cups of self-raising flour, sifted
• ¾ cup of caster sugar
• ¾ cup of milk
• 125g of butter, melted and cooled
• 2 medium eggs, beaten
• 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.
2. Line a 12-hole muffin pan with paper cases.
3. Combine flour and sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the centre.
4. Add milk, butter, eggs, and vanilla essence, and stir with a large metal spoon gently until combined.
5. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases.
6. Bake for about 15 minutes. A skewer stuck in the centre of the cakes should come out clean.

I’ve started putting together a list of places to take Maw and Paw when they visit later this year. I think a trip to this place will make the list.
